An Actiontec firmware update is necessary if you’re having problems with your router. If you’re running Verizon FIOS, chances are your main router is an Actiontec brand. But no matter who your ISP is, it’s extremely important to make sure you keep your router’s firmware up to date. Router manufacturers will frequently update firmware. Firmware is software that is installed on a programmable chip located on the router’s circuit board. It is comparable to the BIOS running on your PC. These router firmware releases can contain security updates, bug fixes and could also improve your routers capabilities.
Actiontec Firmware Update Method
You can perform an Actiontec firmware update a couple of ways. You can visit the Actiontec website and locate the model to find the latest firmware available for download. Or you can log in to your router and set it up for automatic updates. Next, click the Firmware Upgrade link.
To log-in to your Actiontec router, open your web browser and type in http://192.168.1.1 and type in your username and password. If you do not know your router’s username and password, you can reset your Verizon FIOS default password.

It may become necessary at some point to reset Verizon router settings to the default username and password. You must know the Verizon FiOS default password for your router in order to complete this task. The credentials can often be found on a sticker located somewhere on the router itself. The most common reason for resetting the router password is when the WiFi password or Administrator’s password is no longer recognized or you have simply forgotten it. The Verizon FIOS router works like any other router. If you look at the back of the router, you will see a tiny reset button.
To reset your Verizon router to factory state, you will need to insert something tiny–like a paperclip–and depress the button for about fifteen seconds. You will see the router reboot. If the router does not appear to reboot, repeat the process until you see the lights on the front of the router go out, then begin to cycle on.
Now that you have reset Verizon router, you can visit the login page by opening your web browser. Note: you will need to be plugged into the router with an Ethernet cable, as the wireless will no longer work until configured. Go to http://192.168.1.1 using your web browser. You should now see the router’s login page. Put the username and password in that is printed on a sticker on the router or included with the router’s original documentation.
Upgrade Your Actiontec Router’s Firmware
Click on the Advanced icon and then select the Firmware Upgrade link once you are logged in. You will then see options to upgrade from the Internet or upgrade from a computer in the network. If your Actiontec router has the ability to upgrade automatically, you should use that option, otherwise you might miss an important update.
After The Actiontec Firmware Update
Your Actiontec router will reboot so the settings can be applied. The process for updating other makes of routers will be similar. The advantage of allowing the router to go out onto the Internet and retrieve its upgrade is that you can be sure it is getting the proper firmware. Otherwise, you will need to be extremely careful to get the proper firmware based not only on make and model, but the revision number of the router. It’s very easy to apply the wrong firmware to a router (or even a PC) so be careful if you opt for the manual technique of updating your router.
Upgrading your Verizon Actiontec router’s firmware is a relatively straightforward process. The key thing is to plan everything out in advance. Realize you may need to reset the router’s password if you do not know the login. Be sure to locate the router’s original name and password. If this isn’t printed on the router, contact Verizon before doing anything else. You may need to physically plug into the router if you need to perform a router reset, so make sure you have a network cable at your disposal. Lastly, do not interrupt the firmware upgrade process. If the updating the firmware is interrupted, this will brick your router.
